Workshop on Story Literacy and Shared Reading

Duration: 

The workshop will consist of two days of meetings (three two-hour meetings per day), for a total of 12 hours of attendance plus 48 hours of personal study.

Objectives: 

First: To acquire knowledge and practical experiences how Shared Reading methods are used in different specific settings (in classroom and educational settings; in Shared Reading groups in prisons, rest homes, institutes for youth care, mental care homes, libraries). Second: To acquire knowledge about the benefits of Shared Reading on reading processes, literacy and on different measures of individual lives of participants (e.g., confidence, well-being, sense of community) and how these effects are assessed.

Content: 

Analyses of the relationship between literary reading, story literacy and well-being. Definition of a Shared Reading method and its application on different settings. Selection of quality literary texts for different participants of Shared Reading. Methods and measures of evaluating the effects of Shared Reading practice, and the aspects of the interaction between reader and texts and reading group that are responsible for these effects.

Methodology:

Lectures will provide an overview of Shared Reading methods, of criteria for selecting literary texts used for shared reading in different settings, the role of the coach / teacher, the opportunities provided for participants and the potential benefits on reading processes, literacy and the individual lives of participants. Practical sessions will focus on discussions of examples Shared Reading sessions – what evidence-based processes are used to tailor the Shared Reading session to the needs of different target groups of participants. Further, implications for empirical research will be discussed.  

Participants are required to read a recommended book before the workshop.

Mandatory for ELIT ESRs in WP3 and open to additional PhD students.

Preparation

Participants read a book by dr. Jan Raes Shared Reading – The Ultimate Therapy (Tielt: Lannoo Publishers, 2021) before workshop.

Program

Day 1 (17 May 2022): 

10-12: Introduction: Shared Reading and its origins (teacher: Dirk Terryn, Het Lezerscollectief / The Reader’s Collective)

14-15.30: Group activity: Shared Reading session of a short story and a poem (teacher: Silvie Vanoosthuyze, Het Lezerscollectief / The Reader’s Collective)

16-18: Shared Reading and well-being. Ideas behind the book Shared Reading/The ultimate therapy: questions about what is being read. Practical aspects of organising Shared Reading sessions: text selection, the role of the coach, tailoring the session to the needs of different target groups of participants (teachers: dr. Jan Raes, Dirk Terryn, Het Lezerscollectief / The Reader’s Collective)

Day 2 (18 May 2022):

10-12: Effects of Shared Reading on individual and social lives of participants: focus on burn-out, stress management and depression. Aspects of text / individual / group. Why people suffering from depression tend to prefer a Shared Reading session to group therapy? Suggestions for measures of evaluating the effects of Shared Reading practice, and the aspects of the interaction between reader and texts and reading group that are responsible for these effect, implications for empirical research (teachers: dr. Jan Raes / Dirk Terryn, Het Lezercollectief / The Reader’s Collective)

13-15: Iterations of shared reading in book reading and literacy practices (parent-sharing books with babies and young children, “big-book” reading practices in kindergarten), impact on learning to read and literacy. Shared reading as teaching method in primary and secondary schools (role of the teacher, text selection, impact on the reader and reading development). The concept of “book clubs” (teacher: Finian O’Shea, Trinity College, Dublin)

16-18: Shared reading and story literacy – the effects of shared reading on reading processes and literacy development of students. Methods and measures to research the effects of shared reading on literacy, reading processes and individual lives of students (teacher: Zuzana Petrová, Trnava University)
