Mesian Tilmatine studied Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the Radboud University in the Netherlands, where he also gained practical research experience in associated institutions like the Centre for Language Studies, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, the Behavioural Science Institute, and the Centre for International Conflict Analysis and Management. He is generally interested in how humans mentally construct meaning based on (linguistic) information available in their environment, and more specifically in how individuals differ in their perception and evaluation of ideas expressed through various forms of narratives, art, and indirect or limited communication.

Within the context of the ELIT network (ESR1), he is working on further exploring the Neurocognitive Poetics Model of Literary reading (NCPM) using quantitative narrative analysis (QNA), questionnaires, behavioural data, and haemodynamic neuroimaging (fMRI). The stated goal of his current project is to use quantifiable text features to predict the affective, immersive and communicative potential of literary texts for individual readers.
